1
Slope-intercept form
2
objective Students will be able to use slope intercept form.
3
Slope-intercept form of a line
A line can be written in the form y = mx + b m = slope b = y-intercept (where the line crosses the y axis)
4
putting equations in slope intercept form
Slope Intercept Form : y = mx + b Solve for y. y should always be positive. Make sure your slope is after the equal sign. The number by itself should be last. If there is a missing part, you can fill in zero.
5
Examples a) 1 + y = x b) 0 = -8x + 5y – 20 c) 5 + 6x = 5y d) y = x
6
To Graph To graph y = mx + b Plot the y-intercept on the graph first From there, use the slope to find other points
7
Find slope and y-intercept and graph
a) y = 3 4 x b) y = -5x + 3
8
Writing slope intercept form given (m) and (b)
a) m = 7, b = b) m = , b = 9
9
Slope intercept for when given two coordinates
Steps: Use the points to find the slope (m) Use the slope and one of the coordinates to solve for the y-intercept (b). Put the slope and y-intercept into the equation y = mx + b.
10
examples a) (3,5), (0,4) b) (-1,3), (-3,1) c) (3,2), (-1,6)
