ME 312/AE 352 INTRODUCTION TO FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS INSTRUCTOR: K. Chandrashekhara Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering 188 Toomey Hall, Missouri S & T Phone: ; *  TEXT: Reddy, J. N., An Introduction to the Finite Element Method, McGraw-Hill Book Co., 2005 (Third Edition). Supplement notes on Book Code and ANSYS commercial code. COURSE OUTLINE: Finite element method is an effective tool used to solve physical problems in engineering analysis and design. It is applicable to many areas such as solid and fluid mechanics, heat transfer, electrical potentials, magnetic fields and so on. This course is intended to provide a foundation in the basic concepts of the finite element method as applied to linear, one and two dimensional problems. The application of the finite element method to solve practical problems requires understanding of the basic theory, modeling techniques, and computational aspects. At the conclusion of the course each student should have attained a basic understanding in the development and use of finite element analysis codes. Live Participation: not required for distance students Grading: Three exams, homework and one individual project using ANSYS commercial code. Homework 30% Project % Exams (3) 60% Total %
