States of Matter (aka Phases of Matter)
December 2014
2
States of matter/phases of matter
State of matter is the physical form in which a substance can exist
3
Kinetic molecular theory (kmt)
This describes how the particles move in all states of matter and also how they move when a phase change is completed.
4
SOLID *Definite SHAPE *Definite VOLUME
Atoms are close together, particles are moving but not fast enough to overcome the attraction between the molecules; particles are vibrating in place
5
lIQUID *NO definite SHAPE, takes the shape of its container
*Definite VOLUME Particles are moving fast enough to overcome some of the attraction between them. The particles slide past each other
6
GAS *NO definite SHAPE, takes the shape container
*NO definite VOLUME, fills volume of container Particles are moving quickly so they can break away completely from one another. The amount of empty space between gas particles can change
7
Solid-Liquid-Gas SOLID LIQUID GAS *Definite SHAPE *Definite VOLUME
Particles are tightly packed and move in place *NO definite SHAPE, takes the shape of its container Particles move a little more freely *NO definite SHAPE, takes the shape container *NO definite VOLUME, fills volume of container Particles move fast and furiously ENERGY is REMOVED; particles slow down and move closer ENERGY is ADDED; particles speed up and move farther apart * Key defining characteristics for you to remember
8
Change of State: Change of a substance from one physical form to another Add or remove energy GAS SOLID LIQUID
9
Phase change summary PHASE CHANGE Goes from: Particles Energy is:
FREEZING Liquid to solid Slow down, move close together Removed 2. MELTING Solid to liquid Speed up, move further apart Added 3. EVAPORATION Liquid to gas 4. CONDENSATION Gas to liquid 5. SUBLIMATION Solid to gas added
10
Phase Change graph As the temperature of a substance changes, the speed of the particles also changes. But the temperature of a substance does not change until the change of state is complete.

PHASES OF MATTER POSTER
Use textbook Chapter 3 (pages and 74-78) to help you The points you need to include are: The three states or matter and how particle movement explains each state A picture example of each that is NOT ICE, WATER, or WATER VAPOR The phase changes along with (1) what states they occur between, (2) what happens to the particles and (3) whether the particle motion is due to energy added or taken away. Key words to include: Solid, liquid, gas, freezing, melting, evaporation, condensation, sublimation Your poster should be neat, easy to read, colorful and understandable. It should also be a poster, meaning that it SHOULD NOT be a piece of paper with only writing on it.
