MATTER REVIEW
2
1. Define the following Matter –anything that has mass and takes up space Evaporation- slow change from liquid to gas Boiling Point- the temperature at which something boils, water boils at 100*C Solubility- the ability for something to dissolve Mixture- two or more things mixed together Condensation- change from a gas to a liquid Melting Point- the temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid, Ice melts at 0*C Freezing Point- the temperature at which a liquid becomes a solid, water freezes at 0*C Solution- a mixture in which something dissolves Precipitation- when moisture (water) falls back to earth (rain, snow, sleet, hail)

2. What is the difference between Mass and Weight?
Weight depends on gravity, Mass does NOT Go to the moon and see
4
3. List at least 5 physical properties a substance may have
Color Luster Shape Size (volume) Mass Texture Taste Sound Density Weight Odor Magnetism Solubility
5
4.List 5 examples of a substance that has undergone a physical change.
Melting solidliquid Freezing liquidsolid Boiling liquidgas (fast) Evaporating liquidgas (slow) Condensation gasliquid
6
5. List the three states of matter.
Solid, liquid, gas
7
6.Which state of matter has the most energy?
Gas, the particles are moving the fastest and farthest
8
7. Describe the solubility of each of the following mixtures
7.Describe the solubility of each of the following mixtures. Which ones keep their physical properties? Sand/water/marbles …mixture Salt/water… solution (salt dissolves) Ice/marble… mixture Pepper/water… mixture Sugar/water/sand…solution Oil/water…mixture Salt/water/oil… solution

8.What causes a cold glass to “sweat”?
Condensation occurs….the warm fast particles of the water vapor in the air hit the colder surface and slow down causing them to change state. Heat energy is taken away from the particles in the water vapor.
10
9. Explain how the water cycle is demonstrated in heating ice cubes to boiling.
11
10. What is the boiling point and freezing point of water?
boiling point = 100*C Freezing point = 0*C
12
11. Know your measurements!!!!
Centimeter…cm…length of short distances Meter…m…length of medium distances Kilometer…km…longer distances Grams…g…mass(use triple beam balance) Milliliters… ml…volume (graduated cylinder)
13
Which measurement? Glass of orange juice….ml Length of a crayon… cm
Size of this room…m Mass of a marble…g
