1922- Thuku was arrested by the British, starting popular protest

Wanted peaceful rebellion, but other Kikuyu formed secret societies that planned to get independence any way they can, including independence
Members of these societies (called the Mau Mau) murdered:

1,819 Kikuyus who disagreed with these societies.
In revenge, the British killed 11,503 Mau Mau
Also put Kenyatta in jail even though he disagreed with the Mau Mau
