1 An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth
SHSU College of Education $1000 Competitive Scholarship Call for Entries The College of Education, under the direction of Dean Stacey Edmonson, is sponsoring a scholarship competition in conjunction with the SHSU Common Reader An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth by Col. Chris Hadfield Having read the novel, students are asked to critically analyze Col. Hadfield as a school-aged child on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Of specific concern is which needs of his may not have been met on a consistent basis. As a public school teacher, you may have a variety of Gifted and Talented students in each of your classes. Design an elementary, middle, or high school classroom specifically to meet the needs of Gifted and Talented students that are not necessarily met in a traditional classroom. Do not limit your discussion to only science/math G/T students such as Hadfield; also consider students with other high-functioning gifts. Scholarship entries can take the form of an essay, 3D scale model, CAD printout, artistic rendition, etc. Regardless of the submission format, a narrative must be provided to explain the classroom elements and how they will help G/T students meet their needs. Entries must be submitted to the College of Education Dean’s Office in the Charles and Eleanor Garrett Teacher Education Center, Suite 216 no later than Monday, March 27, 2017 at 5:00 pm. Entrant must be a current student of Sam Houston State University in good standing. Entrant must complete an official entry form. Entrant’s name must not be on the entry. Entry will be given a unique number designation to insure fair review.
