1 NBC Seminar Localized drugs delivery hydroxyapatite microspheres for osteoporosis therapy Speaker: Jin Hyung Lee Ph.D. Korea Institute of ceramic engineering and technology (KICET)                             This study describes the preparation and characterization of drug loaded hydroxyapatite ceramic microspheres. The formation of hydroxyapatite microspheres were initiated by enzymatic decomposition of urea and accomplished by emulsification process (water-in-oil). The microspheres obtained were sintered at 500℃ to remove organic compounds remained which potentially causes toxicity. The microspheres with a mean size range of 257um were in a spherical shape. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) indicated pores on the surface of the microspheres with random size. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX) showed that the ratio of calcium to phosphate was more than 1.23 both before and after sintering. Alendronate which is a drug for osteoporosis was loaded into the hydroxyapatite microspheres through the pores. To prove the bio-drug loading, BSA was loaded in the microspheres. In the releasing profiles, both drugs sustainedly released in 1mM PBS buffer for 30 days. Finally, the effect of the aldendronate loaded microspheres on increasing bone density was investigated by animal test. It was clearly shown that the bone density was increased after treating the alendronate loaded microspheres in osteoporosis model rat.
