1 RULES AND REGULATIONS OF HOLY FAMILY COLLEGEOF NURSING
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS By I. Matewere (Dean Of Faculty)

2 ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND EXAMINATION
The knowledge, skills and attitudes of health trainees shall consistently be monitored to ensure that they are meeting the standards specified for that level (class) of learning. Students shall be assessed in order to evaluate their performance and suitability for continuing the training at each class and they are expected to pass both theory and practice.

3 Academic performance In order to facilitate effective performance and assessment, students shall: (a) Be informed to attend all classes, practical sessions and tutorials of their program. (b) Be oriented on how to access learning materials and resources. (c) Be informed of their responsibility for own learning utilizing available resources such as library, academic and hospital staff, laboratories and colleagues. (d) Shall be assessed at least twice both theory and clinical practice during the term/semester. All tests and quizzes shall form part of the continuous assessment Continued…

4 (e) Be given feedback of their performance both in writing and verbally depending on the type of assessment and monitoring. (f) Be counseled in case of low performance and be guided to improve. (g) Be informed of the minimum standards specified in this policy document in addition to the approved standards and requirements of their program as specified by the regulatory body. (h) Not be withdrawn on academic grounds before the end of academic year evaluation. (i) Submit their original Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent to the registry for verification which will be photocopied and returned

5 Examinations There shall be continuous and end of semester examinations administered by the college. Continuous assessment shall contribute 40% and end of semester shall contribute 60% to the final grade. Depending on the requirements of the program, trainees shall be required to sit for licensure examinations or complete internship period in addition to final college examination. Cont…

6 (a)Test and examination will be held regularly according to tutors discretion (b)All students shall sit for final examination in all courses they have studied during that period. Failure in more than one course will necessitate counseling by the principal Tutor/Tutor with a view to improve his /her grade. (c)Reports on academic and clinical performance will be sent to parents/guardians with comments on progress. (d)Students are required to attend all classes. Students, who miss class for some reasonable excuse, should notify the tutor or Head of Departments. Misconduct in the classroom is not allowed. The Tutor can refer deal with the minor ones. Major offences will be referred to the disciplinary committee.

7 Criteria for examination grading
The grading criteria shall be as follows in the programs: Pass mark shall be 55% in all courses and programs. 75-100% in all the courses shall be a distinction. 65-74% shall be a credit. 55-64% shall be a pass 40-54% shall be a marginal failure. 0-39% shall be undoubted failure.

8 Supplementary examinations
Students who get 65% and above in all the courses and an average of 70% at the end of the semester will appear on the Dean’s List and the Office of the Dean of Faculty will consider giving them a token of appreciation. Supplementary examinations Based on the results of the examinations, the college shall offer remedial strategies to the student who has not performed well either to write a supplementary or repeat the semester or course depending on the extent of failure. Students shall be given a chance to sit for supplementary examination not earlier than 2 weeks upon release of examination results. Any score above 55% on each course supplemented shall be graded as 55% (pass).

9 Supplementary examinations shall be administered if a student:
Has marginal failure in at least 50% or less of all the courses. Has passed all courses but has an undoubted failure in one subject. Repeating the course Has undoubted failure in one or two courses, she/he will repeat course/courses. Repeating the semester Student shall be required to repeat the semester/ if: Cont…

10 She/ he has undoubted failure in threeor morecourses and /or marginal failure in 50% of the courses. This type of failure shall warrant no prior supplementation. She/he fails the supplementary examinations Students shall be allowed to repeat only once in the entire training program.

11 Academic appeal If the student is not satisfied with the examination results, she /he may: Appeal to the chairperson of the examination committee in writing through the chairperson within seven days of release of results. The chairperson shall convene the examination committee to hear and decide on the appeal. If the student is still not satisfied with the first appeal results or feedback, he/she may appeal to the College Board through the college principal. If remark is requested, cost remark shall be at a fixed rate of k2000 per script. This cost shall be met by a student. A moderator shall remark the requested scripts.

12 AWARDING A FINAL GRADE The final grade at the end of the programme will be awarded by using the average grade for each semester/year as follows: An average of: 75-100% in both theory and practical at the end of each semester/year shall donate a distinction. 65-74% in both theory and practical at the end of each semester/year shall be credit. 55-64% shall be a pass. 0-54% shall be a fail

13 WITHDRAWAL FROM TRAINING
Students shall be withdrawn from training on academic grounds or gross misconduct. i. Withdrawal on academic grounds if he/she Has undoubted failures in 50% or more of the courses Mandates a second repetition in the whole program ii. Withdrawal on misconduct A student shall be withdrawn from his/her training if he/she commits gross misconduct as described in section (ii) of this policy following a hearing and decision made by disciplinary committee.
