6
Propaganda and censorship
Propaganda promoted the spread of pro-Nazi ideas Censorship stopped the spread of anti-Nazi ideas Used posters, radio, films, newspapers, rallies, paintings and sculpture Censored all books, films, newspapers. Banned modern music and theatre.
7
Nuremberg rallies Annual rally with marches, flying displays and speeches… Attended by hundreds of thousands of people… Were they all Nazi believers or were the rallies just fun to watch??
8
Books & films Ran a heavily-publicised book-burning in 1933
Censorship of all books Mein Kampf was the best selling book (was it also the most read??) Films had to have a pro-Nazi message and the newsreels were all about Hitler’s achievements Many people avoided the newsreels by coming late
9
Jazz Music … was banned This only made the Swing Youth more keen to listen to it! … either using old records or through foreign radio stations, which was very risky
10
Newspapers Jewish and anti-Nazi papers closed down
All content was closely censored As a result, circulation fell by 10% (suggests many didn’t want to read the Nazi message)
11
Radio Made cheap radios available
Only broadcast Nazi stations, not foreign ones People bought the radios because they were cheap and played music as well as Nazi speeches… Listening to BBC punishable by death!
