The setup designs are still subject to important evolution, nevertheless About 2 crucial elements related to our direct interests RICHes (high & low momenta) are necessary TPC is the central tracking element in 2 approaches All this matches our fields of expertise: RICH detectors MPGDs (the up-to-date approach to high-rate TPC read-out) Slide shown yesterday RD_FA_workshop, Roma 9-10/11/ WP Silvia DALLA TORRE

4 HIGH & LOW p RICHes HIGH-p: PID in the range 6 < p < 60 GeV/c
Radiator: gas is mandatory Collider implementation: short (~ 1 m) radiator length Two possible ways, both requiring deeper exploration High pressure, studied for ALICE upgrade VHMPID Towards the very far UV with window-less approach (prototype tested at Fermilab) In both approaches gaseous photon detectors have been used LOW-p: PID in the range p < 6-8 GeV/c Liquid C-F radiators: very limited p range DIRC-derived approaches complex, even if very promising: Focusing DIRC TOP TORCH Areogel Collider implementation: Critical procurement Problematic in 2-radiator RICHes Large space for intellectual contribution We start from here: next 3 y activity RD_FA_workshop, Roma 9-10/11/ WP Silvia DALLA TORRE

5 TPCs The next TPC generation for high rate operation requires ungated TPCs How? By Ion BackFlow (IBF) suppression in MPGDs IBF suppression recipes deteriorate dE/dx resolution … Parameter tension  appropriate compromise needed The future will start with the upgrade of ALICE TPC 2 options Multiple-layer GEM detectors with different geometries (4 layer & 2 geometries for ALICE upgrade) GEM pre-amplification + a MICROMEGAS (MM) stage, proposed for ALICE (not selected) Resistive MICROMEGAS not yet there In principle superior: intrinsic IBF suppression in MMs In based on THickGEMs and resistive MMs Our approach to gaseous PDs RD_FA_workshop, Roma 9-10/11/ WP Silvia DALLA TORRE

9 OUR RESISTIVE MM – A WINNING APPROACH !
Global (whole hybrid) IBF rate < 5% No resistive coating is present inside the detector volume (CsI there) Stable HV ! Dilemma: GEMs or THGEMs is a (hybrid) MPGD photon detector for RICHes? the comparative study of the photoelectron extraction in gas atmosphere is the second R&D item by the LEOPARD RICH specific Efficiency map Photoelectron extraction studies Gain map G.Hamar and D. the present hybrid photon detectors have an Ion BackFlow (IBF) rate ~ 5% ultimate figure?  enhancing the control of IBF is a third R&D item synergic to a possible approach to TPC read-out by hybrid sensors, where MMs can be combined to GEMs as already proposed and studied using traditional non-resistive MMs SYNERGIC with TPC RD_FA_workshop, Roma 9-10/11/ WP Silvia DALLA TORRE
