2
FUNCTIONS OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
Break down food Absorption Eliminate wastes
3
DIGESTION BEGINS Moisten food and begin chemical breakdown
epiglottis esophagus Salivary glands Trachea Moisten food and begin chemical breakdown Long muscular tube that connects mouth and stomach A flap of skin that seals off windpipe stomach Breaks down food with muscles and digestive juices
4
Peristalsis – involuntary waves of muscle contractions that move food through the digestive system
5
FINAL DIGESTION AND ABSORPTION
LIVER -Breaks down medicines -Gets rid of nitrogen from body -Produces bile which breaks up fat particles PANCREAS Produces enzymes that breaks down starches, proteins and fats SMALL INTESTINE Absorption of nutrients LARGE INTESTINES Water absorbed by body and “good” bacteria make Vitamin K
6
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE SMALL INTESTINES
VILLI: Millions of tiny finger-shaped structures Found on the inner surface of intestines. Absorb nutrients through the blood vessels and carry to the rest of the body
7
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE LARGE INTESTINES
