WHAT WORKS... Phonics matters massively! Reading for pleasure is central to success Quality, rich texts Parental involvement A focus on vocabulary Reading for pleasure = fluency too

2 THE 5 CORNERSTONES OF READING...
Phonemic awareness - ability to hear sounds in words Phonics - segmentation (letters and sounds) Fluency - reading easily, accurately with expression Vocabulary Comprehension 1, no point if can’t hear the sound 3. Practising again and again and again with the same books / series of books 4. If don’t know what word means then can’t do number 5 (comprehension)

3 Phonics - decoding liberates fluency...
Sandfield pupils start on day 1 - daily - automaticity - fun - applied With comprehension from the start Fun! Not dull. And needs to be applied - show phonics flash cards and recommend them / teachyourmonstertoread.com Starts in EYFS and progresses all the way through school

Repeated re-reading of a text Increasing speed Increasing accuracy Increasing expression Rehearsing a reading or performance Constant practice at an easy level, i.e. the same book or a book series

6 Increase independent reading
Parental involvement… Increase independent reading Child who reads 20 minutes per day reads almost 2 million words per year. Establish daily reading sessions + magpie books (10 minutes) Reward and emphasise reading at home - it is homework of the best kind! (10 minutes) Let children choose their own books for reading for pleasure

7 A focus on vocabulary… Vocabulary liberates comprehension:
“It is rare for students to struggle with reading comprehension if their decoding and vocabulary are well developed.” Spencer, M, Quinn, JM and Wagner, RK 2014

15 Speed vocabulary sessions
- speed read the new words - cover the words and speed spell (dictation) - explain the meaning and invent a sentence - sentence combination - practise combining two or more sentences using the vocabulary (improves comprehension)
