SAFE WORK INSTRUCTIONS
The following safe work instructions is NOT INTENDED to replace hands on training requirements of the code of federal regulations. The intent is to provide an overview of known potential safety hazards associated with equipment operation. Hands on training with an experienced operator on each specific model must be conducted. The trainee can not proceed onto production until they are determined ready to proceed by the supervisor of the training. Before any operation or maintenance procedure is performed with or on this equipment, it is important that personnel have a complete understanding of the location and functions of all controls and indicators, as well as, the location and use of all emergency shutdown controls and procedures.
Steps for Initial SWI Training:
Prepare – Review the SWI.
Present – Quick Card at the machine with experienced operator.
Tryout – Person performs tasks with supervision.
Follow up – Competency points are verified by supervisor and is signed by the trainee/trainer to complete the training.

Belt work:
Examine your work area.
Utilize effective communications during all tasks.
Prior to performing any work on belt or pressurized systems (water, air, hydraulic) the components must be de-energized, locked, tagged out and released (and release the take-up).
Before guarding is removed belt must be locked and tagged. Prior to re-energizing belt guarding must be re-installed in the original manner.
Install and maintain fire valves at required intervals.
Ensure firefighting materials are stored at proper locations along the beltline.
Install and maintain remote shut-offs (jabcos) along the belt line.
Special harnesses and retractable lanyards must be used while working in elevated areas (6’ and up).
When aligning belts, never place your hand or other body part in any position that could come in contact with a moving belt or belt roller.(Special tools are designed to train belts minimizing risk).
Any time one must pass under or over a conveyor in operation, a suitable cross over or cross under must be utilized.
Scoop/feeder operators must have current operator’s training.
Scale down any loose roof and ribs.
Continually monitor your work area and travel ways to ensure it is free of tripping obstacles and hazards.
Maintain hand tools and other mechanical devices free of damage and defects.
Always remain alert to other personnel and equipment in the work area. Utilize blue lights to notify others of your presence.
During belt startup, ensure that all personnel are” in the clear” of the tailpiece.
Utilize proper body positioning and safe lifting techniques.
When locking out any belt components, a tag with your name/date/time/ and area and a personal lock must be utilized.
Verification through verbal communications should be conveyed to those working in the area the item has been locked out.
When using ladders, the ladder is to be secured and personal tie off is required above 6’.
Always cut away from your body.

Belt work (cont’d):
Wash down hoses may have high pressures. Use caution when turning on and off. Make sure the shut off valve is equipped with an oval handle to prevent turning on if dropped or dragged.
Once belt clamps are positioned on a belt check to ensure their functionality and integrity prior to performing any additional work.
When installing and removing water or air line components, inspect for damage or defects. Never re-use a damaged component.
