Cellular Respiration
2
An Alternate Route… When you exercise for long amounts of time your muscles need to make ATP When you sprint, your lungs and blood cant produce oxygen fast enough to meet your muscles’ needs for ATP Sooo … muscles will use a process called fermentation Makes ATP w/o using O2
3
Fermentation Makes ATP entirely from glycolysis
Produces a waste product called lactic acid Buildup of lactic acid = muscle fatigue Your body consumes oxygen (heavily breathing) to convert lactic acid back to pyruvic acid
4
2 Types of Fermentation Ethyl Alcohol Fermentation - occurs in plants, bacteria and fungi pyruvic acid + H Ethyl Alcohol + CO2 *Bread rising Lactic Acid Fermentation – occurs in animal muscle cells pyruvic acid + H Lactic Acid
5
Lactic Acid Fermentation Ethyl Alcohol Fermentation
Glycolysis 2 ATP Anaerobic – without oxygen Fermentation Aerobic – with oxygen Respiration Lactic Acid Fermentation Animals 36 ATP 2 ATP 2 ATP Ethyl Alcohol Fermentation Plants NET = 38 ATP With oxygen NET = 4 ATP Without oxygen
6
The many uses of fermentation…
