Energy Flow in the Ecosystem
E.Q: What is the main difference between food chains and food webs? How much energy is transferred to the next trophic level?
2
Energy Flow in the Ecosystem
Energy flows through an ecosystem in one direction. From the sun or chemical compounds to autotrophs (producers) and then to various heterotrophs (consumers)
3
Food Chains Marine Food Chain
Food Chains – Show how matter and energy move through the ecosystem in a series of steps showing which organisms transfers energy by eating and being eaten. Each organism in a food chain represents a feeding step, or trophic level, in the transfer of matter and energy. Marine Food Chain Phytoplankton Zooplankton Fish Squid Shark
4
Food Webs Food Webs – models that show all possible feeding relationships at each trophic level in a community; links all food chains in an ecosystem together.
5
Ecologic Pyramid Ecologic Pyramid – (aka Trophic Level Pyramid) diagram that shows amounts of energy or matter at each trophic level Three different types:
6
Ecological Pyramid Only 10% is passed from 1 trophic level to the next
Snake 10 kcal Mice 100 kcal Insects 1000 kcal Producers 10, 000 kcal 80 g Human 800 g Chicken 8000 g Grain Fox (10) Birds (25) Grasshoppers (250) Grasses (3000) ENERGY PYRAMID BIOMASS PYRAMID PYRAMID OF NUMBERS

Chapter 3 Vocabulary 1. In your science notebook prepare 2 pages for vocabulary 3 Columns Picture that represents the word (must use at least 4 colors) Word (the vocabulary word will go in column 2 Definition write the definition for each word in 3rd column. You can find the definition in notes and Bio Box

Instead of doing to vocabulary in three columns you can do the following assignment On the front side draw a picture that represents the word (must use at least 4 colors) Back side: Word Definition Use the word in a sentence
