When DDT was sprayed, the mosquitos were killed. DDT also accumulated in cockroaches. When the geckoes ate the cockroaches, the DDT caused them to slow down in running speed and the cats could now catch and eat them. The cats then died, allowing the rat population to increase and cause more diseases. Because more geckoes were eaten, the amount of caterpillars increased and they ate more thatch.
