3 What is the Journal? The Undergraduate Historical Journal is a digital publication. Hosted by the University of California's eScholarship website. Professional, student generated, and focused Published bi-annually Includes senior theses, essays, book reviews, and independent research.

4 Why a New Journal? UC Merced provides many opportunities for new student projects. A shared publication creates an academic community. Currently no undergraduate journal on- campus that has a comprehensive peer- review process. A focus on history

Begin your publishing career Gain researching, writing, and publishing experience Enter the scholarly dialogue and assert your ideas Give your degree some substance

6 What Can Be Published: Senior Thesis
Senior theses are the “capstone” of a history major's undergraduate career. You invest many hours in research, writing, and revision, so.... why not? There is no page limit on senior thesis submissions. You worked hard and we want to publish your original work.

7 What Can Be Published: Essays
Essays that contain a driving historical element or use a historical interpretation can be published. Open to all majors as long as they meet these requirements. Valid submissions include, but are not limited to, focused research papers or theoretical formulations. Can be class assignments.

8 What Can Be Published: Book Reviews
Book reviews are concise summaries and critiques of scholarly monographs. They should include an identification of the argument(s) as well as a section judging the success of the argument(s). Book reviews are a simple way to publish in the journal.

9 What Can Be Published: Independent Research
Projects outside of class. Independent research will be accepted like essays but receive a modified review process.

10 How Is My Work Reviewed? Submissions are sent through a sequence of phases. The author will receive confirmation of acceptance to the peer review process within a week. When a submission is accepted for review, it will enter the first phase of the process...

11 Phase 1: The Editorial Board
The Editorial Board will review new submissions for: Clarity of thesis Coherence of argument Cohesion of language Historicity Correct citations Basic mechanics

12 Phase 2: The Professors The professor of the class in which the research or book reviews was assigned will review the submission for: Content Accuracy Completion of argument Breadth of study Analysis

13 Phase 3: The Bright Success Center
The Bright Success Center will review the submission for: Basic mechanics Structure NOTE: Content cannot be altered after this phase.

14 Phase 4: Pre-Publishing
A complete submission will return to the Editorial Board for final format adjustments. Professor Ruth Mostern will review the submission and give final validation. After validation, the submission will then be published in the next issue. Published work will be viewable on eScholarship and various online indices.

15 How Do I Publish? Submit work online Submit in-person
Submit in-person At Editorial Board meetings in SSM 114 between 1pm and 2pm on Tuesdays Submit work in PDF, DOC, or RTF format. Include all footnotes, endnotes, and works cited

16 When Can I Publish? Now Open for Submissions Submission Deadline: January 26th, 2014
