7. Writing comprehension exercises
Principles to guide your writing of exercises:
Ensure the answers are within the text and do not depend on knowledge outside of the text.
Sequence questions according to the sequence in which the answers occur in the text.
Comprehension of the questions should be within the students’ proficiency – they should not need a dictionary to work out the meaning of the question.
Use slightly different wording from that which is found in the text, so that students must use understanding and not simply find the same words in the text (e.g. timetable/schedule)
Include questions that will prompt a variety of reading strategies: skimming, scamming, looking for the main idea, and reading for detail.
