STUDENT ENGAGEMENT Student engagement tends to be viewed as:
the level of interest students show towards the topic being taught their interaction with the content, instructor, and peers and their motivation to learn and progress through the course

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT • How can we engage our students in the online environment? • How can we prevent feelings of frustration or isolation and keep them motivated? “Student-to-student interaction is vital to building community in an online environment, which supports productive and satisfying learning, and helps students develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills” (Kolloff, 2011).

A discussion to include a picture of themselves Introductory videos Let them choose (video, infographic, PowerPoint, simple webpage) Upload a picture to their Blackboard profile “Meet the Professor” section

COMMUNICATION IS KEY Establish Contact Methods and Hours
“During the course, instructors should use announcements or messages to provide course information and reminders on a regular basis, and address student questions and concerns promptly and thoroughly.” (Silverstone & Keeler, 2013). Create an open, accessible environment for students Communicate your address and phone number as well as the best days and times to reach you Give a response time frame Let students know in advance when you’ll be away longer than 24 hours Hold online office hours using Blackboard Collaborate Ultra

Be clear and concise with your directions and expectations Provide your directions in multiple ways Blackboard Announcements Tool/ s Videos PowerPoints, infographics Remember: All video or audio directions should be provided in text as well

Give video and/or audio feedback Make your presence known in discussion forums Provide self-check activities Provide encouraging responses (sandwiched comments) Reward students’ successes!! Offer extra credit Use Student Retention Center
