Three Scientists (Dr. Richard Onwonga, PI/Head of Team; Dr. Stephen Mureithi and Dr. Judith Mbau) from the Department of Land Resource Management and Agricultural Technology (LARMAT) are involved in a multi-sector project titled System for Land-based Emissions Estimation in Kenya (SLEEK).
4
SLEEK is a data and modelling system to track emissions and removals of greenhouse gases for the land sector. SLEEK will enable Kenya to report its land sector emissions, engage in carbon markets and evaluate different land use scenarios for sustainable development.
5
SLEEK will inform policy decisions on resource use, including planning for regrowth, protection of forest resources, improved agricultural productivity, and enhanced water availability. SLEEK is a Government of Kenya project domiciled in the ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, and funded by the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) with funds from the Australian Government.

Several “data elements,” or components (Element Working Groups, or “EWG”s) have been identified as needed in order to develop and implement SLEEK. The University of Nairobi (UoN) is a member and lead organization of the Soil Carbon EWG.
