TECHNICAL AND ADAPTIVE Challenges
2
Positional and Personal leadership
What is a positional leader? What is a personal leader? What does it mean to lead without a title? Which type of leader are you? Can you be both? Positional and Personal leadership

You notice in your chapter that service projects are at an all time low. Very few projects are happening, and the ones that do happen have very low attendance. When the President addresses this issue in chapter meeting, the members who do attend service events become defensive and verbally attack the remaining members for not pulling their weight. Existing frameworks

Technical problems and solutions
“Physical” Policy Surface level Current know-how, experts, authorities Change happens in the authorities of the organization Technical problems and solutions
5
Adaptive problems and solutions
“Behavioral” Change of minds, actions, behavior, and hearts Deep into the issue If after technical fixes the problem persists, it’s usually an adaptive problem Usually longer term fixes Change happens in those who are invested in the organization Adaptive problems and solutions

Is this a technical problem, adaptive challenge, or both?
You notice in your chapter that service projects are at an all time low. Very few projects are happening, and the ones that do happen have very low attendance. When the President addresses this issue in chapter meeting, the members who do attend service events become defensive and verbally attack the remaining members for not pulling their weight. What is the problem? Is this a technical problem, adaptive challenge, or both? What are the technical/adaptive aspects of the problem? What are solutions for those aspects? This is what I believe: It is both, there are technical and adaptive aspects to this issue. There are no right and wrong answers… Technical Problems: Members not attending events, events are not happening Adaptive Problems: Members lashing out at other members, members seem apathetic towards service projects Solutions: Rather than calling out those who aren’t doing it, appreciate those who are doing it. (adaptive) Require 3 service projects per year (technical -> may lead to behavioral changes later down the road) Discuss as a chapter what projects are happening, what projects can we do, where can we go as a chapter? (adaptive) Host a brohood retreat to reconnect as brothers (technical/adaptive)

Is this a technical problem, adaptive challenge, or both?
You overhear a conversation in the band hall regarding the chapter’s image. Two bandmembers have very negative views of the chapter. When you ask them about their positions, they say that Kappa is exclusive, doesn’t do anything worthwhile, and serves only themselves. Upon further investigation of other non- Kappa members, similar sentiments emerge. Your chapter is voting to allow someone into the chapter. This particular PM creates a lot of controversy in the chapter. The chapter votes, and the President calls over the other officers of the chapter. After 3 minutes of them discussing, it is announced that this member will be initiated. When you talk about the delay with the President, she tells you that the vote was so close and there were many abstentions that she became confused and made a judgement call to allow the person to join even though they did not technically have the votes necessary to join. Third Degree is in a week. You notice that chapter meetings have become chaotic. Members talk over each other, several side conversations occur, members do not show up for meeting, members disagree on just about everything if they speak. The President seems to be doing very little and appears apathetic. What is the problem? Is this a technical problem, adaptive challenge, or both? What are the technical/adaptive aspects of the problem? What are solutions for those aspects?

How did you decide between technical and adaptive?
How do Technical and Adaptive play into Positional and Personal Leadership? Where can you see this working in your chapter?
