The art of carpentry dates back thousands of years. It is believed that jesus was a Carpenter.

Pre-requisites of entering the Carpentry Trade.
Anyone with at strong work ethic , good team work skills, vast knowledge of basic mathematics and a desire to work in the trade can be a carpenter. You must find an employer that is willing to let you be apart of their team, A good way to show off your carpentry skills , work ethic and listening skills is to undertake Work Placement within a Carpentry business for a week or so. If there is an opening for an apprenticeship the employer may consider you for the position.

What is an Apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship or traineeship is a training contract between an employer and an employee in which the apprentice or trainee learns the skills needed for a particular occupation or trade. A carpentry apprenticeship goes for 4 years ( 3 years if you have previously attained your cert 2 at tafe prior to your apprenticeship.) Most employers wont even consider giving you an apprenticeship until you have completed year at school.

What is a carpenter? Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who work in the construction industry fabricating primarily wood constructions; from the entire framework of a building to ornate woodwork on stairs and trim. Some carpenters pre-fabricate cabinets and other structures in shops or factories while others work on construction sites, cutting, joining, and installing structural elements. Many specialize in one aspect of construction.

Workplace Learning I am booked in to do work experience with a building contractor A.S Villani Building Contractor, the boss Tony Villani is overseas at the moment but we will arrange the date I will undertake placement when he gets back from his trip. The site I will be doing placement at is located on the corner of Corio/Nixon Street. As Villani specialise in commercial and industrial building but also do some domestic projects. I’m also booked in for one week of placement at Moretto Builders from 26th-30th september.
