Jonathan Edwards, the pastor of a Congregational church in Northampton, Massachusetts, delivered this sermon in Enfield, Connecticut, on July 8, It was immediately acclaimed, and is now regarded as one of the most famous sermons in American history. Edwards’ sermon epitomizes the evangelical fervor of the Great Awakening of the 1730s. During the Great Awakening, rousing sermons and a more participatory style of worship revived what many considered to be flagging Puritan religious devotion

“Fire and Brimstone” Many Puritan preachers used a technique of preaching called “fire and brimstone.” “Fire and brimstone” – A style of public speaking where a preacher scares a crowd of religious individuals by discussing hell and the afterlife. Can you think of any modern examples of “fire and brimstone?”

Imagery: Activity Take out a blank sheet of paper and turn it sideways. Draw TWO lines down the paper to divide it up into three sections. In each section, I want you to draw an image that is created in Jonathan Edward’s “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” speech. In each box, you need to include a quote from the speech where you found each image. You do NOT need to color the images, just draw them.
