Biology - The Scientific Study of Life (Oxford Dictionary)
LE1 01 – Into & Vocabulary Biology - The Scientific Study of Life (Oxford Dictionary)
4
Biology includes … The study of microscopic structures of single cells. Study of the global interactions of millions of organisms. The study of the life history of individual organisms as well as the collective history of all organisms.
5
Why Study Biology? Scientists estimate that 40 million species of organisms inhabit the Earth. But of these 40 million species, only about 2 million have been identified and named, and only a few thousand have studied in any detail. Thus, much of the world of biology remains to be explored and studied.
6
Biology is at the forefront of key ecological issues and global challenges.
Research being conducted today in biology, including plant breeding and genetic modification, can be used to increase the world’s food supply.
7
Thus, by studying biology, you’ll be at the forefront of cutting edge research and crucial medical findings. Lastly, by studying biology, you will in turn help yourself make more informed decisions about your own body and health. You’re a living thing and biology is the study of all living things.
8
History of Biology The birth of biology (4th – 5th century B.C.), was first documented with the Greek philosophers. With their interests ranging from all living creatures (from the humblest plant to man himself). The word Biology was coined in the early 19th century - this study included all physical aspects of the life. Biology, from bios (life) and -logy (study of …)
9
A Biologist is a person that studies biology.
It is a subject with clear subdivisions, such as botany, zoology or anatomy, which all are concerned with living organisms.

Biological Vocabulary
One of the keys to being successful in biology is being able to understand the terminology. Difficult biology words and terms can be made easy to understand by becoming familiar with common prefixes and suffixes used in biology. These affixes, derived from Latin and Greek roots, form the basis for many difficult biology words.
11
Examples Biology – derived from “bios” meaning life
suffix “-ology” meaning to study. Microscope – combination of “micro” meaning small “scope” loosely translated meaning “to see”
