The Big 8 Allergens of Concern
The eight most common allergens, Milk, Eggs, Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Soy, Wheat, Fish, or Crustacean Shellfish, cause more than 90% of all food-allergic reactions. Although these are the most commonly allergenic foods, more than 160 different foods have been indicated in food allergy reactions. 1 Single presenter

Provides Clarifying Information Food Allergy vs Food Intolerance Milk allergy child cannot receive pizza on pizza day Lactose intolerance child can receive pizza on pizza day if documented Severity of the Allergy Avoid all sources or major sources Can this child consume baked goods that contain their allergy such as milk or egg? If yes, opens additional choices and decreases restrictions Single presenter

Purpose of Temporary Accommodation Meals: Ensure no child goes hungry Provide a Safe Meal Provide a meal that does not contain any of “The Big 8 Allergens of Concern” Eliminate waiting for District Office Approval Feed children in a timely matter Meet Head Start Program Regulations Single presenter

Breakfast Gluten Free Breakfast Cereal Oat or Rice Base Fruit Choice- Fresh or Prepared Café will check for additional fruit allergies (i.e. no strawberries) Fluid Cow’s Milk or cup for Water Depends on provided information If child does NOT have a milk allergy- provide Fluid Cow’s Milk If child has a Cow’s Milk Allergy- provide cup for water until proper documentation is received Single presenter

Lunch Protein Options- Provide appropriate protein per restrictions Grilled Chicken Strips Plain Beef Patty (i.e. no bun/no cheese) Plain Pinto Beans (Vegetarian option) Grain Unflavored Brown Rice Fresh Fruit or 100% Fresh Juice Fresh Plain Veggie (no coleslaw due to egg) Fluid Cow’s Milk or cup for Water Single presenter

Field Trip Accommodation Meal
Field Trip Allergy Lunch Protein: Provide appropriate proteins per dietary restrictions IW Turkey Stick (1oz M/MA) IW Cheese Stick (1oz M/MA) If child cannot consume Milk, provide 2 Turkey Sticks Grain Tortilla Chips Fresh Fruit or 100% Fresh Juice Fresh Plain Veggie (no coleslaw due to egg) Fluid Cow’s Milk or Bottled Water Single presenter

Breakfast Club Provision 2 Breakfast Sites
Breakfast Club Letter sent home to all children with allergy alerts Breakfast club does not go to breakfast carts Club meets in designated area to retrieve appropriate meal labeled with their name Single presenter

Be Prepared! Best Practice
Pre-portion Temporary Accommodation Meals or Special Diet entrées in freezer safe, sealable bags Heat properly and quickly so child doesn’t have to wait Avoid opening a 5lb bag for serving Helpful during high-volume times of diet requests (i.e. back to school, after break, etc.) Single presenter
