5 Problems with standard mouth care
Toothpastes contain many irritants such as strong flavours and Sodium Lauryl Sulphate Mouthwashes can contain alcohol and strong flavourings The frequent sipping of water can affect the elasticity of saliva and render it less effective. Better to remain well hydrated and consider gels/sprays. Reliance on foods and drinks containing sugar to get relief causing decay Many products are too painful to use and are therefore avoided causing further disease Lack of knowledge amongst medical/dental profession

6 What can you do? Listen and record symptoms (challacombe Scale)
Examine if appropriate Ask what has helped previously and what causes increased soreness Explain the need for a new mouth care system for their ’new’ mouth Explain the different types of product available (evidenced based) and how they could help Provide written information and/or prescription

8 How to introduce a new mouth care routine
What is their biggest problem? What have they tried previously? We need to explain that their mouth is more sensitive following their treatment and that they now need to try milder formulations of mouth care products Macmillan have a good booklet on mouth care and dealing with dry mouth Sometimes we can use analogies to explain the need to try numerous products such as hair or skin care Once a patient has found relief the impact is profound. Physically, Psychologically and socially
