1 SNPP Regional Retransmission Service: Plans and Status of Implementation Presented to CGMS-43 Working Group 1 session, agenda item 6

2 Overview of the NOAA Direct Broadcast Real-Time Network Project
The NOAA Direct Broadcast Real-Time Network is a demonstration of a method for providing low latency infrared and microwave sounder data to the NOAA National Weather Service. Started as a Sandy Supplement project to reduce risk of SNPP/JPSS gap by providing all available sounder data with much lower latency than stored mission data. Sustained by JPSS Program Science until NOAA decides on operational commitment based on a formal value assessment by NWS to NESDIS. NWS will complete evaluation by 2017 – efforts includes developing CrIS and ATMS assimilation steps in the regional forecast model. The sounder data will be assimilated by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) and increase the percentage of polar data used in NCEP NWP models, provide backup in case of anomalies in polar global processing. The project presents an opportunity to expand the coverage of the WMO Direct Broadcast Network, particularly for advanced sounders (CrIS, ATMS, IASI, AIRS).

3 NOAA DB Network Antenna Sites
New EARS FY-3 Service (1/2)

4 DB Antenna Sites and Status
Future Guam station is under consideration, along with direct download of SNPP data from JMA to cover nearly all of the NH Pacific.

5 First VIIRS true color imagery from the new direct readout station at AOML in Miami
September 18, 2014

6 Roles of NOAA/CIMSS and EUMETSAT
NOAA/CIMSS would be responsible for operating and monitoring: the network of DB reception stations the processing of ATMS, CrIS, ATOVS and IASI to level-1 BUFR encoding of all Products FTP push over the Internet to NWS/NCEP & EUMETSAT of all BUFR products As a EUMETSAT trial service (start TBD) for a duration of 1-2 years it is proposed that data are disseminated to EUMETSAT Member States and ECMWF via EUMETCast (services will not be operational on CIMSS side); No product processing required at EUMETSAT, but simplified monitoring of the data flow.

7 Proposal for providing data to EUMETSAT
The NOAA Real-Time Network represents an opportunity to increase the coverage and availability of advanced sounder data (including CrIS, ATMS, IASI and ATOVS). NOAA/CIMSS have offered to EUMETSAT the possibility to collect this data from NOAA network and disseminate it through EUMETCast. NOAA Network Coverage EARS-CrIS/ATMS/IASI/ATOVS Coverage NOAA Network Coverage EARS-CrIS/ATMS/IASI Coverage

8 Percentage of LEO sounder data used as a function of latency

9 Note much improved latency expected with JPSS-1 for global data
SNPP Polar region latency improved from 2 hours to 10 minutes 95% of the data is within 50 minutes (taking into account BUFR conversion, etc) Between degrees latitude ~ 30 minutes Actual performance will be 50% better than specification JPSS-1 uses real-time playback of data at least while still in view of the ground station, which reduces the minimum latency number, while SNPP plays back first the oldest data of the entire orbit

10 Summary The Sandy Supplement project is nearing completion.
DBRTN will be maintain as a demonstration project and will contribute to the new WMO Regional Transmission Service - DBNET. NOAA JPSS Program Science participated at the WMO DBNET meeting in March 2015 Close collaboration with EUMETSAT will continue.
