K-12 Reading Plan

Background In 2006, funds for reading became an allocation through the Florida Education Finance Program. In order to receive this reading funding, districts must write a K-12 Comprehensive Research-Based Reading Plan ensuring that system of comprehensive reading instruction is being provided to students enrolled in the K-12 programs.

Expenditures Funds may be spent on the following:
The provision of an additional hour per day to students in the lowest 300 schools K-5 reading intervention teachers The provision of highly qualified coaches to support teachers PD for teachers around reading instruction The provision of Summer Reading Camp The provision of supplemental instructional materials The provision of intensive interventions for students in grades K-12 identified as having a reading deficiency

MTSS Comprehensive Reading Plans must align with the critical components of the MTSS framework which include: Providing effective core instruction for all students Administering high quality assessments to monitor progress and identify students and systems in need of interventions Instructional use of a wide variety of complex texts to challenge student vocabulary & comprehension Designing and implementing interventions that are matched to student needs.

Elementary CAI Pasco County Schools will use Pearson’ ReadyGEN as our Comprehensive Core Reading Program Pasco County Schools will ensure reading intervention is provided to students performing below grade level, including students with disabilities and English Language Learners by using a balance of diagnostic, formative and summative assessments to respond to student learning A decision making tree describes how data is used to determine specific reading instructional needs and interventions for students in grades K – 5 (attach these documents)

Elementary CAI All students receive a minimum of 90 minutes of uninterrupted, explicit and systematic reading instruction which use reading, writing, speaking and listening and language development during their core instruction Foundational skills are also developed during reading instruction for a systematic approach for learning that follows a progression and uses flexible grouping to differentiate for the needs of all learners. Students will receive immediate intensive interventions beyond the 90 minute reading block to support the student’s acquisition of tier 1 learning goals.

Elementary CAI Students will engage in text based discussions in order to deepen content area understandings around complex text sets and use their knowledge to write from multiple sources to demonstrate learning and thinking. Pasco County schools will provide an Extended School Day in reading during the year and Summer Reading Camp during the summer to provide additional instruction and support for student’s with a reading deficiency.
