1 Smart Devices, Environments & Interaction to Enable the Internet of Things
Stefan Poslad, PhD School of Electronic Engineering & Computer Science Centre for Intelligent Sensing (CIS)

2 Contact Details, Research Interests
Web: IM: skype poslad1 Primary Research Interest IoT: Internet of Things, Ubiquitous computing, mobile services, wearables But also Intelligent Systems of agents, use Semantics etc Management (energy, safety, privacy, comms) of IoT

3 China Links & Research Undergraduate Project Supervisor Beijing University of Post Telecoms (BUPT) from 2013, best project student award Participated in 15 Student Recruitment events in China Visiting Professor at 2 Chinese Universities IETLab, BUPT, , Wuxi Taihu University, Entrepreneurship Judge for finalists of the International Talent Technology Entrepreneurship Challenge (iTEC 2014) - organised by China-Britain Science and Culture Association (CBSCA) Textbook in use with > 25 Chinese universities on Internet of Things / Ubiquitous computing Member of EU-China smart City Expert Group 10/18 Chinese PhD Students since 2006 3/4 Chinese Post-doc researchers

4 IoT: R&D As an IoT researcher and developer, I seek to:
1. Engineer new interactive products / things – Smart Device & Smart Environment(-Device)s 2. Acquire, fuse and process the data collected from things 3. Interact with & interconnect these things as part of larger, more diverse, systems – Smart Interaction I am director of new MSc in IoT starts September 2016; teach mobile services and IoT Smart Devices Smart Interaction Data Science Smart Environments

5 Some Example IoTs: (Mobile) Devices to Sense Motion 1
WAN-LAN Transceivers GPS, WiFI, GSM WPAN (BLE) <-> NFC Transceivers Vehicle Transceivers, pollution, etc Proximity Sensors e.g,. Traffic Lights Inertial Sensors

6 Some Example IoTs: Wearables
Sound activated wearable light display Shoes / foot force Haptic Feedback eHealth Body Monitoring Exercise Monitor + 3D Printed Watch

7 2016-17 Example Project Topics
Tracking Badminton Racket Movement Using Embedded Sensors Tracking Table Tennis Racket Movement Using Embedded Sensors Creating Indoor Maps of buildings based upon how people move Improved Human Motion Detection using Multiple Inertial Sensors Sensing what type of place someone is in A sensor hub to monitor seed growth and plant welfare Smart Clothes or accessories that can change their appearance Controlling Multiple Objects or services in your home / work via a universal controller, Bluetooth device, phone etc A Virtual Reality application using Google Cardboard Turn your phone into a Hologram
