Nakhimov Naval School was founded during the Great Patriotic War in for the boys who became orphans because of the war. Now it is a boarding school where teenagers from 10 to 18 get general education.
3
They are attracted both by the opportunity to get good education and wearing a beautiful uniform. They dream of travels, of seas and oceans. They serve their motherland since their childhood.
4
Nakhimov Naval School is housed in a very beautiful building, as you can see. Now we are standing in front of the southern façade which faces the Neva River.
5
Originally this building was the home of the Studying House named after Peter the Great. And the main decoration of this façade is connected with this prominent name.
6
The building was constructed in Russian baroque style by Alexander Ivanovich Dmitriyev in honour of Peter the Great as both the founder of Saint-Petersburg and the winner of the battle at Poltava which was in 1709.
7
That is why there is a very impressive sculpted relief of Tsar Peter I in cuirass (armour) and ermine cloak on the main façade of the building of Nakhimov Naval School. And there is the inscription of gratitude under the relief - “To the Father of the Fatherland”.
8
Dmitriyev was influenced by Alexander Nikolayevich Benua who was keen on historical trend in art and romantic past of Russia. The project was also approved by Tsar Nicolas II in Alexander Dmitriyev gave the drawing of the main façade of the building to the Naval School as a present.
9
There are also many militarized decorations, which are not quite in accordance with the purpose of the building. Have a look at the sculptural decoration which shows young athletes carrying a lion skin. This allegorical bas-relief symbolizes the Russian victory over the Swedish lion. In addition, it highlights the fact that the school building was erected in honour of the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Poltava.
10
The Naval School was named after Pavel Stepanovich Nakhimov, who was one of the most famous admirals in Russian naval history. In he sailed round the world on board the frigate «Cruiser». In1827 Nakhimov took part in Navarino battle against the Turkish Fleet.
11
In 1853 Nakhimov destroyed the Turkish Fleet at Sinope
In 1853 Nakhimov destroyed the Turkish Fleet at Sinope. The Turkish Admiral Osman Pasha was taken prisoner. All the Russian ships after this brilliant operation returned safely to Sevastopol. His finest hour came during the siege of Sevastopol, where he and Admiral V. A. Kornilov organized from scratch the land defense of the city and its port, the home base of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
12
In the complicated pattern of the bars under the banisters you can see two monograms: two crossed Ps and M, which stand for Peter Prima and Menshikov. These banisters, or ladder rails in marine language, are engraved with the names of all the graduates of Nakhimov Naval School since There are about 15,000 of them here.
13
The Aurora Cruiser is moored at Petrovskaya Embankment, in front of the Naval School.
The Aurora played an important role in Russian history. The cruiser fought heroically during the Tsushima battle of the Russian-Japanese war. During World War I the Aurora participated in the military actions in the Baltic Sea. During the Great Patriotic War the cruiser, berthed in the Gulf of Finland near Oranienbaum, defended Leningrad. For some time she was used as a training ship for the cadets of Nakhimov Naval School. In 1952 the cruiser was turned into the Museum.
14
The Department of Naval Training is located on the second floor of the main building. Here nakhimovites have classes of the basics of naval training: they learn semaphore alphabet, Morse code, International Code of Signals, the basics of ship and boat design, yachting and navigation.
15
In the Museum of Nakhimov Naval School there are many interesting exhibits which can tell us a lot about the first nakhimovites and educators, about ships and admirals. You can see items of combat weapon and objects of everyday life at sea.
