Welcome to Physics 12
2
Why Take Physics? Write a point form list of your reasons.
On the white board write three different and important reasons to take physics. This introduces individual reflection, then small group discussion and then class-wide concenssus.
3
Required or Recommended
engineering, physics chemistry, astronomy, computer science, math, architecture, forensic science life science, kinesiology, medical physics, optometry, audiology, medicine These go from the obvious to the reasonable to surprising.
4
useful (education and careers)
Students who do not take ‘recommended’ 12U physics fail or drop out 4 times more Physics majors do best on MCAT, GMAT, LSAT. Even if you do poorly in 12U physics, you will have a head start. Medicine? Business? Law? Why?
5
challenging (transferable skills)
quantitative, analytical big picture thinking deals with fundamentals and connections using Excel, working with others communicating with words, equations, graphs, diagrams, models and analogies. The first two are about physics in general and the second two are emphasized in this course.
6
Physics Marks Which of the following is false? Physics marks
may prevent university acceptance will only be high if you are good at math are lower than functions and calculus mar are lower than bio. and chem. marks Introduces the use of MC cards. All of these answers are questionable.
7
useful (applications)
Motors, generators, airplanes, satellites, rockets, skyscrapers Computers, lasers, solar panels, GPS, nanotechology, photonics Medicine (MRI, EKG, PET, CAT, radiation therapy and tracers) Solutions for Global Warming Pre-modern applications. Modern applications. Medical applications The Biggest problem ahead.
8
interesting time travel, twin paradox black holes, gravity waves
big bang theory, dark matter and energy quantum transportation, multiple universes SR GR The universe – the very BIG Quantum weirdness – the very small

The Structure of the 12U Course
Read the course outline. Website: roberta.tevlin.ca Quizzes and assignments (7 x = 30!) Science Fair project Math Unit Welcome to University Unit The universities look at your top 6 marks, and if physics is not one of the required six, they don’t care what mark you got. You should take 8 courses in grade 12 to have a stronger background in information and skills like organizing time. Only take fewer is if you have a serious time commitment (more than 10hours/week) with extra-curricular, volunteer or paid work.
