Difference between Physical Education & Physical Activity
Physical education is the foundation of a comprehensive school physical activity program-CSPAP-. It is an academic subject that uses a planned, sequential program of curricula and instruction, based on state and/or national physical education standards, which results in all students, including those with disabilities, developing the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to adopt and maintain a physically activity lifestyle. Physical education should be taught by state- certified physical education teachers. Why do you need to support the initiative Emerging studies are clearly pointing to intentional physical activity as a priority in developing the whole child

Difference between Physical Education & Physical Activity
Physical activity is bodily movement of any type and may include recreational, fitness and sport activities such as jumping rope, playing soccer, lifting weights, as well as daily activities such as walking to the store, taking the stairs or raking the leaves. 6
Let’s Move! WV is an initiative that has strong support from State Superintendent, Jorea Marple for grades Pre-K through Eighth that recommends schools accumulate an additional 15 minutes of daily physical activity. High schools are encouraged to explore ways to add additional physical activity opportunities to the school day. 15 minutes of daily physical activity is the initial focus. Additional activities are being developed for the school year Online showcase for activity of the week based on submissions from active schools. Flash Workouts for national sport and physical education week in May Adventures to Fitness will be available for K through 5th grade online. Information should be available first of September.

National Physical Activity Recommendations
In 2008, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued physical activity guidelines for Americans, ages 6 and older. Recommendation was for children and adolescents to participate in 60 minutes or more of physical activity daily. The American Heart Association recommends that children and adolescents should do 60 minutes or more of physical activity daily and they participate in physical activities that are appropriate for their age and enjoyable.

Where do you fit in? It is suggested that the Resource Guide activities be introduced by the physical education teacher at the beginning of the school year. Your role is to be the “Physical Activity Director” for the school. After introduction of activities, the classroom teacher facilitates student participation in Let’s Move! WV-Active Schools with activities from the guide or from a resource of their choice.

Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program
The goal of a CSPAP is two-fold. Provide a variety of school-based physical activity opportunities that enable all students to participate in at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day. Provide coordination among the CSPAP components to maximize understanding, application, and practice of the knowledge and skills learned in physical education so that all students will be fully physically educated and well-equipped for a lifetime of physical activity.

…do something about it!”
Everyone in school needs to be actively engaged in and supportive of Let’s Move! WV -Active Schools for it to be successful. Dr. Marple’s message says it all… “ If you are in a school where kids aren’t physically active… …do something about it!” If you don’t do something about it…no one will!
