Introduction Different materials have different properties. For example, cast iron is hard and brittle while serayah is soft and light. In order to make better use of materials for our design artefacts. We should first learn the properties of materials. Next Prev. Introduction Generally, materials can be classified into three groups: 1. Natural Materials: wood, clay, stone, gold, silver, brass, steel, aluminium, etc. 2. Altered Natural Materials: leather, wool, paper, concrete, alloy, etc. 3. Synthetic Materials: glass, acrylic, P.V.C., etc. Next Prev. Questions What is so good about plywood? List its good points.
It bends easily across the grain direction of the outside layers. The price is much cheaper than the other wood. Next Prev. H Name: D & T Date: 29/2-15/3 Title: Materials-Introduction Class: F.2A-E Scale: Cycle 17/18

Man-made boards Basic things to know about Man-made boards :
Man-made boards can be classified into 2 main groups. PLYWOOD Plywood is made up of thin layers of wood with the grain directions running at right angles in each layer. Plywood bends more easily one way than the other. It can be make curves because it is flexible as well as strong. Next Prev. Man-made boards HARDBOARD
This is rather like strong cardboard. Hardboard is not as strong as plywood but is quiet a lot cheaper. This makes it useful for some large projects. Most hardboard must be kept dry. Next Prev. H Name: D & T Date: 29/2-15/3 Title: Materials-Introduction Class: F.2A-E Scale: Cycle 17/18

Man-made boards Serayah
It is produced from various kinds of trees and is the most type of solid wood in use. It is used in Making furniture; Site construction; Making boards. Next Prev. H Name: D & T Date: 29/2-15/3 Title: Materials-Introduction Class: F.2A-E Scale: Cycle 17/18

Man-made boards Teak Teak is a kind of hardwoods and grows mainly in Thailand, Burma and India. Its colour is brown with attractive straight grain. It is hard and strong; oily and resistant to moisture and acids; commonly used for making high class furniture. Next Prev. Metal Basic things to know about Metal: Metal is a very important material. We depend on it for many different things in our daily lives. So you will certainly know what it looks and feels like. Metals are extracted from ores. The most common metals are iron, aluminium and copper, etc. Usually metals need to be mixed to improve their qualities. The mixed metals are called alloys. Next Prev. Metal FERROUS METALS NON-FERROUS METALS Types of metal:
We put metal into 2 groups: FERROUS METALS These contains iron. Examples are steel and cast iron. These will rust or corrode unless protected. NON-FERROUS METALS These do not contain iron. Examples are aluminium and copper. These will not rust or corrode. Next Prev. H Name: D & T Date: 29/2-15/3 Title: Materials-Introduction Class: F.2A-E Scale: Cycle 17/18

Metal Mild steel Other Example: Steel is grey in colour. Nails
It rust easily unless protected. Car bodywork is usually made from steel. Other Example: Nails Nuts and bolts Washers Tinplate This is very shiny and silver in colour. It is made by coating thin sheets of steel with tin. It is cheap but easily scratched, which allows the steel beneath to rust. It is easy to cut but beware of sharp edges. Tin cans are made of this. Next Prev. H Name: D & T Date: 29/2-15/3 Title: Materials-Introduction Class: F.2A-E Scale: Cycle 17/18
25
Metal Copper This is reddish-brown in colour.
It is quiet tough and can be beaten into shape. It resists rusting and is very good conductor of heat and electricity. Most electric wires are copper. It is expensive, so it is only used for small parts of projects. Aluminium This is silvery and may be shiny. It is fairly cheap, light and easy to work. It resists corrosion without being painted. This make it good for outdoor or water projects. It conducts heat and electricity well. You cannot solder it. Next Prev. Plastics Basic things to know about Plastics:
Compare wood and metal, plastics are very new materials. Most plastics are made from oil. Types of plastics: Plastics can be divided into two families. Thermoplastics These plastics soften when you heat them. Therefore it can be remoulded repeatedly. The common thermoplastics are polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene and acrylics, etc. Thermosets These plastics burn away if you heat them. Therefore it cannot be resoften on heating. Next Prev. Free Materials Get them before they reach the dustbin:
We live in a very wasteful society where thousand of useful things are thrown away every day. People may be just bored with them or want a new version. Even when something is worn out it still has lots of valuable parts that you can use on the projects. This is a very good ideas because: It saves you a lot of money It gives you parts and materials you might not have thought of. It saves our planet’s materials and energy and reduces pollution.
