1 How Big is a Foot?

2 Good Morning! – Answer these questions in your science notebook.
What can you infer from the title and illustration on the cover of this book? What might the book be about? What might the conflict be in the book?

3 Do Now: Why was the bed too small for the Queen?

4 Do Now: Answer these questions and talk to a partner about your answers.
Are all the strings the same length? Why not? Wasn’t everyone supposed to measure 3 feet? How many feet are in a yard?

5 Do Now: Answer these questions and talk to a partner about your answers.
How does your string compare to three feet as measured by a yardstick? How do scientists solve this problem?

6 What is the metric system?
The metric system is the way that scientists across the world measure things such as mass, length, volume, and temperature. It is based off of units of 10.

7 WHY DO WE USE THE METRIC SYSTEM?
Almost all other countries are using the metric system. Other countries’ companies are refusing to buy products from the U.S. if not labeled in metric units. Scientists need a universal way to communicate data (SI Units).

8 The unit of Length Meter Scientific unit of length
Also can measure the space from one thing to another Abbreviated “m” About the same length as a yard About three feet long

9 What would we describe in meters?
The length of the classroom The length of the teacher’s desk The length from here to the bathroom

10 The unit of volume Liter Abbreviated “L”
Scientific unit for volume Volume is the amount of space an object takes up Abbreviated “L” A 2L is the size of a soda bottle, so 1L is about half that.

11 What would we describe in L
The amount of liquid in a bottle Soda, juice, gas in a car Capacity of a pool The pool can hold 2,000,000L of water.

12 The unit of mass Gram Abbreviated “g”
Scientific unit of mass It measures an objects mass or weight Abbreviated “g” One gram is about the weight of a dime This is the unit of measurement on the triple beam balance.

13 Do Now: Line of Learning
Give 2 examples of length, mass, and volume. Are there any questions you have from today’s lesson?
