The turning point in WWII in Europe for the Allies One of the bloodiest battles in history Germany vs. Russia July 17, 1942-Feburary 2, 1943 Russia won Stopped Germany from going into the Soviet Union

4 German Army General Paulus
Hitler wanted control of the Volga River so he could launch further attacks in the Caucasus The sixth army was Under the command of General Friedrich Paulus He Advance to the city in September 1942 with the task to take Stalingrad and the oil fields in the Caucasus General Paulus German soldiers

5 Russia Russian soldiers
Stalin ordered for the city of Stalingrad had to be protected Stalingrad was an important because it was the center of communications in the south and a center of manufacturing The Russians couldn’t let the Germans get control over the oil fields in the Caucasus Under the command of Marshal Zhukov Russian soldiers

6 The surrender Zhukov had 6 armies to surround the city(5 around the city and 1 in the city), trapping the Germans in Stalingrad Hitler forbid Paulus from surrendering, but winter had come and the Germans were cold and running low on food and ammunition Hitler ordered Paulus to fight to the last bullet and promoted him to field marshal to encourage him towards the end of January 1943, Paulus surrendered when there was nothing else he could do A Soviet soldier waves the Red Banner of victory

Main decider of the German’s position in WWII Germans lost manpower and equipment The Germans simply didn’t have enough manpower to go against the Russians when the time came for them to advanced into Germany Causalities of the war

8 Destruction and VALOR Nearly 2 million military and civilian casualties 91,000 Germans were taken prisoner Parts of Stalingrad were destroyed German Prisoners THE RUSSIANS SHOWED TRUE COURAGE AS THEY FOUGHT AGAINST THE GERMANS TO PROTECT THEIR CITY OF STALINGRAD.
