THE RELEVANCE OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES TOWARDS ZERO HIV/AIDS “NOPE 7th International Conference on Peer Education, Sexuality and HIV/AIDS 15th – 17th June 2016” OKELLO AMBROSE KIU ANTI AIDS ACTION CLUB (AAAC) GFHAI

2 Introduction Kampala International University Anti AIDS Action Club (KIU AAAC) is a student Club affiliated to Generation Free of HIV/AIDS Awareness Initiative (GFHAI) Is a student focused organization whose aim is to create; Sexual Reproductive Health HIV/AIDS Awareness prevention in institutions of Higher Learning. The organization provide a Platform through which Government and service providers can reach the student communities with HIV/AIDS Control and support programs.

3 Objectives The Club was initiated by Generation Free of HIV/AIDS Awareness Initiative to evaluate the combination of medical and behavioral communication intervention contribution towards ZERO AIDS and other related STI infections among the young people in institutions of higher learning An interview with a KIU student who came for HIV Testing And also with the aim of extending the same services to their communities where they come.

4 Cont’ Its objectives are to carry out; Socio-economic research,
Sero-behavioral and prevalence surveys, Advocacy, Formulation of HIV policies and interventions, Documentation, Formulation and dissemination of HIV/AIDS information which consider needs of young people in institutions of Higher learning.

5 Methods In , Anti-AIDS Action Clubs of Kampala International University in a collaboration with Generation Free of HIV/AIDS Awareness Initiative (GFHAI) and their service providers, mainly TASO, AMREF, Uganda Blood Bank and MJAP Engaged students and surrounding communities mainly from Kansanga, Kabalagala and Nsambya in a health awareness for five days in each zone for three months that were aimed at, 1. HIV counseling and testing (HCT)

6 Cont’ 2. Health awareness training. 3. Blood donation
4. Safe Male Circumcision (SMC)

7 Results As a result of the overall above activities carried out in three zones (3) and at the main campus of the university, It indicated that a total of 7063 students and community people accessed all services ranging from HCT, SMC and Blood donation 94 were HIV positive representing 1.3% and were referred for care and treatment. 6969 were HIV Negative representing 93.7 %

8 Conclusion The findings were that, students need to be exemplary and uphold their morals and take the lead in enhancing their efforts towards combating the prevalence of HIV/AIDS within their universities and communities
