Context Clues Context clues are hints that an author gives to help define a difficult or unusual word. The clue may appear in the same sentence as the word it is referring to or in a sentence before the word it is referring to. 4 types: Synonym Antonym Explanation or definition Specific example

Examples Elijah was really happy when he found out that he got an A on his exam. He felt elated! Ian was so irate that he wanted to throw something, but he took a deep breath and then he felt better. Elephants and rhinos have a pewter color to their skin. Erica was feeling really lethargic Sunday. She didn’t have any energy left after going to Disneyland on Saturday. In order to keep the dogs in the yard, we built a parapet, a low wall or railing.
