Metropolis (Fritz Lang, 1927): The last German Expressionist film. The film’s sets are a marvel of visual effects and design. Here, contrived through drawings and models, we see the dystopian city rendered in a depth of field, and on an enormous scale. Note the ‘lighting’ in the background of the shot, which strategically draws our attention to the looming structure.
