2. Record Enrollment 34,748 total student enrollment, fall 2012
Undergraduates: 26,996 (up 972 or 3.7%)
Minority groups: 5,020 (up 471 or 10.4%)
International: 2,135 (up 192 or 9.8%)
Graduate: 6,481 (down 64 or -1%)
Professional: 1,271 (up 35 or 2.8%)
Because of the absolute top quality of Mizzou faculty and the tremendous service of our staff, we again have welcomed record numbers of students.
We are pleased that MU is seen as a destination university for top Missouri scholars and a growing number of out-of-state students.
MU’s enrollment has grown by 8,624 in just 10 years with large increases in ethnically diverse, high-ability, out-of-state and low-income students.

3. Notable Undergraduate Enrollment Trends

Our enrollment continues to grow and the quality of our students remains strong and our students are increasingly diverse.

4. MU Awards More Degrees Each Year
Fall 2012 retention rate is 83.6% (average for state 75.3% and national 78%)
Six-year graduation rate is highest in MU history at 70.8% (average for state 54.7% and national 53.6%)

5. MU Faculty News
We are working to increase the number of MU faculty in the National Academies.
MU Sinclair School of Nursing Curators Professor Marilyn Rantz was admitted to the Institute of Medicine, one of the highest honors in the field of health and medicine. She has spent the past 30 years conducting research to improve seniors’ quality of life with the national model Aging in Place.

6. Why is AAU Membership Important?
AAU universities are the key players that set the higher education and research agendas for the nation.
AAU membership enables our state to compete at the highest and most impactful levels, with a strong voice in Washington and beyond with the world’s policymakers.
Membership is a catalyst for faculty and administrative interaction among peers to further the teaching and research mission at the highest level of quality.
AAU membership indicators are embedded in the MU Strategic Plan that seeks to strengthen a university that “prepares citizens for leadership in a diverse, global and technology-driven environment.”

7. AAU Facts and Figures
AAU universities generated $16.7B in federal academic research expenditures in FY08, representing 54% of all federally funded research provided to colleges and universities (61 out of 5,000).
AAU universities spent $5.2B of their own institutional funds on academic research in FY08.
Faculties at AAU universities include 3,134 members of the prestigious National Academies.
Over 60% of the AAAS 2008 Class of Fellows are affiliated with an AAU university.
Over 70% of Nobel Prize winners have been affiliated with an AAU university; 35% are currently on AAU member faculties.

Of AAU NAS members, 3134 are in academia. ~3641 total in academics (AAU/Non –AAU). There are another ~2500 NAS members in industry.

8. MU Is Among the Top 2% of U.S. Universities
AAU membership is about half of the institutions classified “Doctorate Very High Research”
Of almost 3000 US 4-year colleges and universities, 295 are doctoral granting institutions.
108 of 295 are classified as having very high research.
60 of the 108 belong to AAU
Therefore: ~2% of US Universities belong to AAU.

Proposition B is a statewide ballot initiative that would implement a 73-cent tax increase on cigarettes, bringing Missouri’s overall cigarette tax to 90 cents per pack. The initiative would generate about $283 million annually in new revenue for Missouri schools and smoking prevention programs.
Of the 30 percent allocated to higher education, the University of Missouri System could apply the funds as follows:
MU Medical School Partnership in Springfield with CoxHealth and Mercy to address physician shortages. The joint partnership would increase medical school enrollment at MU by 33 percent by creating a clinical campus in Springfield
Increasing the number of health care workers in Missouri, especially in rural areas, through programs targeting rural health science students, additional scholarships and loan forgiveness programs
Supporting the ongoing maintenance and repair of labs and infrastructure used in educating students in the science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) fields
Faculty investments, particularly retaining and attracting quality faculty in science, technology, engineering or math disciplines, and further investments in research centers
Investing in key university strategic priorities, including student success programs and campus centers of excellence
