Agenda UU Day at the Legislature - The Arizona Legislature (update)

Reviving a Tradition VUU was once a key organizer and very active in the state- wide UU Day at the legislature, but it hasn’t been held for the past ten or so years! Lets revive that tradition. Paul Mitchell, from Granite Peak congregation is coordinating the revival! Mary R. and Anne are the point persons from VUU. Rev. Andy will be there! UUs from all over Arizona will be there! Get acquainted again with our legislature.

What Will We Do? Gather at Wesley Bolin Park (10 a.m.)
10 to 10:40 - Hear brief remarks from a few legislators (Sen. Hobbs, Sen. Ableser, and Sen. Landrum) Then (10:40 to 12:30) Go to a committee hearing Visit your own legislator (make an appointment in advance) Get “registered” so you can “speak” in committees from your home computer Visit capitol museum 1 p.m. lunch at UUCP to discuss starting a “state-wide advocacy network”

Call or one of your legislators. Talk to their staff and see if you can get an appointment (15 min.) between 11 and 11:45. Click here for a list of Arizona legislators Click here to find what district you are in

You can attend a committee hearing .... (we’ll have a list) You can go with Some UUCP members to meet with Sen. Katie Hobbs at 11 Anne to a committee hearing and then to meet with Sen. Leah Landrum at 11:45 Mary to meet with Sen. Ed Ableser of Tempe at ..... Paul Mitchell to “register” so you can speak from your home computer

But what would I say? Take someone with you. (three or four is better)
Tell the legislator you appreciate his/her service. Mention that you are very supportive of education, health care, and immigration reform. That you support the Governor’s budget and her plans to: Add more funds and positions to Child Protective Services Add more funds to K-12 education and post-secondary Expand the AHCCCS (medicaid) program That you hope she will support the comprehensive immigration legislation being proposed in Congress

Use the VUU “legislative alert”
Take a copy of the most recent VUU “Legislative Alert” with you Ask the legislator what his/her agenda is for the year. Ask them how we can help (with their agenda, if we support it), or how we can help make politics in Arizona more civil, more focused on the public interest. Is there any issue YOU are especially interested in? Let Mary or Anne know and we’ll find some briefing materials for you!

Advocacy Do’s and Don’ts
Introduce yourself Thank them for taking the time to meet with you Be respectful & friendly Let them know that you are interested in... Include personal relevance.. Thank them Do not be angry or hostile or accusatory Do not have too much information Do not argue Do not exaggerate or make claims you cannot support Do not lose your credibility Do not take up too much of their time

How to get to the Capitol
FromVUU or almost anywhere: Take I-10 toward downtown Phoenix Where I-10 and I-17 split, take I-17 going west (on the right) Exit I-17 (I-10 truck route) at 7th avenue Go north on 7th avenue to Washington Street Go left on Washington Street. Where it splits, stay to the right and look for visitor parking on the left. (Or go left where it splits, and look for parking on the right). Wesley Bolin Park is right in front of you!
