Reading Like a Historian
Reading Skills Questions Students should be able to… Source -Who wrote this? -Why was it written? Identify the author’s position on the historical event. Context -When was it written? -Where was it written? Understand how background information influences the context of the document. Close Reading -What does the author say? Identify the author’s claims about an event. Compare -Where can you go to learn more about this subject? -What do other documents say? Comparing documents to each other.

Historical Context: Providing background on the primary source. Task: Question that students are attempting to answer. -Make the question interesting -Doesn’t have to have a right or wrong answer -Students have to support answer with evidence from document(s) Document(s) with Scaffolding Questions: Each document comes with 2-3 questions to help guide the students thinking.
