1 Coming of Age Complete the first page (p. 6) in your Coming of Age packet. Definition of coming of age: a transition from childhood to adulthood marked by physical, mental, and emotional changes. Put on the timeline these ages: Then, above each age, write privileges that go with that age and below, write the responsibilities.

2 Diction – word choice intended to convey a certain effect
Diction can be categorized as Formal or Informal Formal = language used for educated audience or professional setting Informal = language used in conversation or for everyday use

3 Diction I would prefer to avoid such an awkward situation.
Answer: Formal I ain’t goin’. Answer: Informal

4 Syntax = sentence structure how words are arranged in a sentence
Syntax can be labeled as Short or Long Simple or Complex (or Compound) Correct or Fragment / Run-on

5 Label the type of sentence.
Syntax Examples Label the type of sentence. I studied for my math test. Answer: Short Because I want to succeed, I studied for my math test last night. Answer: Complex or Long Because we have a math test. Answer: Fragment

6 Imagery Imagery – descriptive words which paint a mental picture (appeals to the senses) It was dark and dim in the forest. The screaming and shouting of the fans drowned the quarterback’s play call. The sweet, juicy orange tasted delicious.

7 Tone Tone – the speaker’s ATTITUDE expressed through words and details
The reader can “hear” the tone of the speaker by the words and details that the speaker uses.

8 Tone Examples of tone words:
Excited, angry, humorous, confident, passionate, bitter, sarcastic, objective

9 Author’s Voice a writer/speaker’s unique use of language that allows a reader to “hear” his/her personality in a text.

10 Metaphor Comparison between 2 unalike things (without using like or as) Examples: Juliet is the sun. My cousin is the black sheep of the family.

11 Simile Comparison between 2 things using like or as Examples:
Your eyes twinkle like stars. The soldier was as brave as a lion.

12 Hyperbole Hyperbole = exaggeration
Deliberate and outrageous exaggeration for a specific effect (can be serious or comic effect) Ex: I’m so hungry that I could eat a horse.

13 Alliteration Alliteration = repetition of consonant sounds at beginning of 2 or more words (close together) Examples: The wind whipped across the fields. Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
