My Plate and Food Groups
Grain Group: Make at least HALF your grains WHOLE grains. Vegetable Group: VARY your vegetables Fruit Group: FOCUS on fruit Dairy Group: Get your CALCIUM rich foods Protein Group: Go LEAN with protein.

Fruits Any fruit or 100% fruit juice counts as part of the fruit group. Fruits may be fresh, canned, FROZEN, or dried. The may be whole, cut, or pureed.

Vegetables Vegetables are organized into 5 subgroups based on their nutrient content. Dark Greens: bok choy, collard greens, romaine LETTUCE, spinach Red & Orange: Carrots, PUMPKINS, red peppers, tomatoes. Starchy Greens: Corn, green peas, lima beans. Beans: Black beans, kidney beans, soy beans, navy beans Others: Asparagus, cauliflower, celery, mushrooms, onions

Protein All foods made from meat, poultry, seafood, beans, eggs, soy, nuts, and seeds are considered protein. Beans are also part of the vegetable group Seafood: shrimp, catfish, starfish Eggs: fried, scrambled, poached Meats: beef, ham, lamb, pork Poultry: chicken, duck, goose, turkey Nuts & seeds: almonds, cashews, peanut butter, seeds

Dairy All milk products and foods made from milk are considered part of this group Milk: Flavor milks, lactose free and reduced fats Yogurt: fat free, low fat, reduced, whole milk, yogurt Desserts: pudding, ice milk, frozen yogurt, ice cream Soy Milk: soy milk, almond milk Cheese: any kind

Grains Bread, pasta, oatmeal, breakfast cereals, tortillas, etc.
2 subgroups: whole grains and refined grains Whole Grain Refined Grain Contains the entire grain kernel Refined grains are processed so that the grains are smoother and last longer, but processed also removes vitamins Whole wheat bread, popcorn, oatmeal, brown rice White bread, corn flakes, flour, tortillas, white rice

Key Terms Calories: units of measuring energy
Serving size: the recommended amount of a food or drink to be served. Daily Recommended Serving Size: The amounts of nutrients and calories an individual is recommended to consume daily Obesity: being seriously overweight Anorexia : an emotional disorder characterized by an obsessive desire to lose weight by refusing to eat.
