4 Controlled Experiments
Standards: Inq.1 - Design a simple experimental procedure with an identified control and appropriate variables. Inq.2 - Select tools and procedures needed to conduct a moderately complex experiment.

The ability of the cans of soda to float or sink. Independent: Amount of sugar in the soda Dependent: Ability of the can to float or sink Controls: Size of can, amount of soda in the can, the water container, the type of water, the person putting the cans into the water

8 Variables Examples of variables: -Temperature -Light
A factor that CAN CHANGE. Some variables will cause other factors to change also. Examples of variables: -Temperature -Light - Open vs. Closed container -Location -Time -Elevation -Pressure

9 A Quantitative Variable is one that is measured using numbers
Examples: temperature is measured in degrees, length can be measured in centimeters.

10 Qualitative A Qualitative variable is one that is measured by its qualities. Examples: bright, dull, clear, rough, smooth, plain

12 Controls The CONTROLS in an experiment are all the factors that the experimenter attempts to keep constant or the same in all groups Keeping a constant will ensure that all trials of an investigation were equally impacted by the variable; therefore, allowing one to see the impact of an independent variable on the dependent variable.

13 Control Group In a scientific experiment, the control group is the standard of comparison to see if the independent variable has any effect.

14 Control Group The control group may be a “no treatment” or an “experimenter selected” group The control group is exposed to the same conditions as the experimental group, EXCEPT for the variable being tested. In a controlled experiment only ONE variable is allowed to change at a time. All experiments should have a control group

17 Independent Variables vs.
Independent variable: the variable that you change or that you WANT to test. Dependent variable: The variable that changes BECAUSE of the independent variable In other words, the independent variable is the cause and the dependent variable is the effect.
