A. Describe in detail 3 impacts of Columbus and the Europeans on the New World.
B. Pick one of the impacts described in part A and describe how that has affected the world in which you live.

European Exploration of the New World led to the convergence of European, African and Native-American people. The meeting of these three peoples resulted in some profiting from the interactions and others not.
A. Explain with supports whom were the “winners” of the “Great Convergence.”
B. Explain with supports whom were the “losers” of the “Great Convergence.”
C. Of the three groups mentioned in the “Great Convergence” explain why some remain “losers” today.

Marco Polo: an Italian who traveled extensively on a trading trip to East Asian land of Cathay, or present day China in the 13th century.
Description of the World: book by Marco Polo describing his travels east.
Renaissance: a period in Europe from 1300s to 1600 marked by a new interest in learning and knowledge.

Crusades
A series of wars between 1096 and late 1200s were Christian Crusaders and Muslims fought for control of Holy Land.

The exchange of goods and ideas and peoples between Europe and
the Americas, named after Christopher Columbus.
Plantations
Large farms that usually produce only one crop to be sold.
Northwest Passage
A Northern sea route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific.

15. Vocab Treaty of Tordesillas or Pope’s Line
An agreement between Spain and Portugal which drew a line running North and South at 370 leagues West of the Cape Verde Islands. Land to the west of the line belonged to Spain and land East of the line to Portugal. Treaty expanded on a line drawn earlier by Pope Alexander VI. Line falls close to 50 degrees west.

16. Vocabulary Santa Fe Capitulations
The name of the contract between Columbus, Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand as they sponsored the explorer’s trips to the New World.
Gave Columbus among other things, tile of Admiral of the Oceans, Viceroy and Governor of the New Lands and 10% of the wealth claimed from the West.

Caravel Sailing ship that had a shallow draft, desirable for long ocean voyages and was easily maneuverable. It was able to sail into the wind.
