1 Generalisation of tooltips
Name : Saira Adams Supervisor : Professor Bill Tucker

2 Project Recap Tooltips appear in small text.
PROBLEM Tooltips appear in small text. Illiterate and visually impaired users may struggle to understand them. Deaf people prefer to communicate in South African Sign Language (SASL). SOLUTION Generalisation of tooltips, with SASL videos as a reference implementation.

3 What was done during Term 4
Testing Content verification Usability testing User manual Text Audio SASL videos Testing analysis

4 Content Verification Ensure that the content itself is correct.
Sign language video ‘says’ what it should. Audio says what it should. Ensure that content’s location is correct. Video content is associated with its correct icon. Same for audio. NB textual ‘breadcrumbs’ help place content correctly, e.g. subtitle for audio/video corresponds to filename for a given piece of media.

5 Video content verification
Testing limitations Planned for 5-10 Deaf participants 3 testing participants at DCCT 2 interpreters (both CODA - Child of Deaf adult, thus socially Deaf themselves) 1 Deaf person Testing Procedure Videos watched three times in a random order. Participants wrote down the test translation. Suggestions noted down on how to improve videos.

6 Video content verification results
9 of 11 videos were clearly understood Confusion of two signed videos due to technical terms Deaf participant gave suggestions- these were recorded

7 Audio content verification
ALL CORRECT

8 Content location Verify that audio and video media is associated with the correct icon.

9 Usability testing Questionnaire
3 testing participants (same as described earlier)

10 Usability testing results
All participants found software very useful. Navigation was easy. Tooltip should loop (technical terms and long spelling) Participants didn’t think subtitles were necessary. All participants learned each button’s function. Videos should sign a description rather than the exact translation.

11 Future work Loop video tooltips
Re-record video clips with a Deaf person and not an interpreter.
