What is diction? Diction refers to the words and
phrases an individual chooses to use in a speech or in writing.

Types of diction: Informal
Informal diction- is the relaxed, conversational language that we use every day. (slang) Used with family and friends Examples: Wise up How is it goin? Lightin up

Types of diction: formal
Formal Diction- uses sophisticated, often technical language. Professional way of speaking or writing. Used when giving a speech, presenting, etc. Examples: He is schizophrenic or insane. The students’ need to develop a significant amount of mannerism

Free verse A literary device used in poems that is free from limitations such as rhyme. Follows more of a spoken word pattern
