3. What is the Commonwealth?
Today the Commonwealth is a family of 53 nations in every continent.
In the past many of these nations were part of the British Empire.
They have now chosen to join the modern Commonwealth.
The Commonwealth includes some of the richest and poorest, largest and smallest nations in the world.

5. What does it do?
Every country in the Commonwealth has signed up to a shared set of values.
These include holding fair and free elections and respecting human rights.
In the past, some countries have been suspended from the Councils of the Commonwealth because they did not follow this agreement.
Zimbabwe was suspended for a year in 2002 because top politicians said president Robert Mugabe's supporters used violence to help him win an election. A row at the 2003 summit in Nigeria led to Mr Mugabe withdrawing his country.

6. Does it do any good?
Commonwealth organisations played a leading role in South Africa when opposing apartheid (the separation of white and black people).
Commonwealth observers are often present at elections to make sure they are fair.
Many Commonwealth projects work with communities to help tackle environmental issues.
For example, the Iwokkrama Rainforest Programme in Guyana protects the rainforest and helps local people earn a living too.

7. Map the Commonwealth Countries
Using an atlas and the list of commonwealth countries. Add them onto your world map.
Shade each territory.
Label the country (using a capital letter, as place names are proper nouns).
Add a key.
Add a title and north arrow.
Divide the work with your partner, so you can search and locate different countries to help each out.

9. She was staying at Treetops, an elaborate treehouse on the edge of a watering hole in Kenya's Aberdare National Park. As the legend goes, she went up the tree a Princess and came down a Queen (George VI having died in his sleep at Sandringham in the meantime). It was, by all accounts, a comfortable three-bedroom shack (plus tiny servant's quarter) built in the upper branches of a giant fig tree.
