3. The “Gymnasium”
A type of secondary school with a strong emphasis on academic learning, comparable with the British grammar school system or with college prep schools in the United States. —> highest primary education available in Germany
Grades 5-12
Other school forms in Germany include the “Hauptschule,” “Realschule,” and the “Gesamtschule.”
Senior students take the “Abitur” final exams, testing material learned in high school on a wide basis.

4. Model United Nations
“an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy and the United Nations agenda.”
ELMUN = annual Model United Nations Conference which offers a unique conference experience to students from grade 9 to 12 at HBG.
ELMUN welcomes about 120 delegates each year.

5. Model European Parliament
an international simulation of the working of the European Parliament for students aged years, aiming to give young people insight into the work of the European Parliament and raise their awareness of European citizenship.
Since 2005, all HBG tenth graders participate in the local MEP.
8 representatives from the HBG are chosen annually to participate in the national MEP.

6. IB World School
The “International Baccalaureate” aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
HBG is IB World School since 2011/2012
Only public school to offer the International Baccalaureate in Bremen
IB Graduates will leave the school with the IB Diploma as well as the German Abitur.

7. COMENIUS
The COMENIUS project aims to help young people and educational staff to better understand the range of European cultures, languages and values.
HBG is a COMENIUS school since 2000/2001.
Former projects included “Tourism - A Threat or Challenge for Europe” ( ), “Towards a Common Understanding of Democracy in Europe; Past, Present and Future” ( ).
