2 Assorted Firebombs and Pie November 1st, 2016

3 Topics for Today 1. Samsung Galaxy Note 7 2. Turkey Frying Technique Reinforcement 3. Thoughts on Thanksgiving

4 Are you working on your balance and flexibility on a regular basis?

5 Effective Immediately:
All Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phones are banned (not allowed) on CAP aircraft (even if they are turned off). Apple iPhone 7’s are beginning to catch fire too … I’m just sayin’

6 No matter what type of mobile phone you use:
Figure out what can hurt you … do something about it! Something is going on in the cell phone world (lots of fires and melt-downs). No matter what type of mobile phone you use: Be REAL particular about where you charge, store, and carry your phone.

7 ‘Tis the Season … Thursday, November 24th

8 Hot Oil turkey fryers are so risky that Underwriters Laboratories refuses to certify them with the “UL Approved” mark.

9 National Fire Protection Association advises “don’t use them”.

10 But … Deep frying sure is fast, and fried turkey sure is mighty tasty.
(3 minutes per pound … 10 Lbs. turkey = 30 minutes) and fried turkey sure is mighty tasty. So … As long as you understand and manage the risks there is no reason not to enjoy a deep fried turkey on Thanksgiving.

11 Why are these things so risky?
Cooking Oil is flammable If you overflow the pot, the burner will ignite the oil Or, if you simply overheat it, it will ignite Heated cooking oil reacts violently (think flaming oil volcano) with water (or ice)

12 Water + Heated Oil = Hot Oil Volcano

13 Immediately following the Hot Oil Volcano Is the Flaming Oil Volcano
The same thing happens if you overflow the oil.

14 Your Deck

15

16 The slightest mistake WILL lead to catastrophe … guaranteed!
NEVER EVER use one of these things inside any structure The slightest mistake WILL lead to catastrophe … guaranteed!

17 Guess what happens next?

18

19 Cook FAR away from anything that is flammable … just in case.

20 “Out in the back yard” would have been a better idea.

21 Those flaming oil volcanos can do a LOT of damage in a hurry.

22 Cook FAR away from anything that is flammable … just in case.

23 A fire in the middle of the back yard is a spectacle …
But it isn’t going to do much damage.

24 I know that you know how to fry a turkey.
But … to reinforce a few safe practices … Let’s review.

25 … off decks, out of garages and a safe distance away from trees and other (flammable) structures.

26 To avoid the flaming oil volcano …
Make sure the turkey is thawed and dry before cooking

27 Follow the manufacturer’s instructions
(READ the instructions) to avoid overfilling (and the fire that will follow).

28 watch the oil temperature carefully
If you notice the oil is smoking, turn the fryer off. Shortly after it starts smoking, the oil ignites

29 Turn off the burner before lowering the turkey into the oil.
Once the turkey is submerged, turn the burner on.

30 avoid water-based marinades

31 Wear goggles to shield your eyes, use oven mitts to protect your hands and arms

32 keep a grease-rated fire extinguisher close by

33 Watch the weather. Never operate a fryer outdoors in the rain (or snow … yeah, right).

34 Choose a smaller turkey for frying.
A bird that's 8 to 10 pounds is best; pass on turkeys over 12 pounds

35 Get someone else to fry your turkey.
Check with local Fire Department. Check with fundraising organizations .

36 Frying a turkey is risky …
But, if you pay attention and plan well, it’s nothing to be scared of.

37

38 Technique Only: Eat a slice of each type of pie available.

39 And, don’t forget the ice cream.

40 A one time overdose of Turkey and Dressing, and Pie (with Ice Cream) isn’t going to kill you.
A little extra exercise wouldn’t hurt anything either … I’m just sayin’

41 Think about a couple of things …

42

43

44 Questions? Comments? Concerns?

45 I say again, DID YOU SIGN THE ROSTER?
I’ll see you next month.
